RUFUS AND THE BABY SPARROW . . .

Congratulations to Mr. Wilks in Dorchester, Dorset for this month's winning story.

I am writing to tell you the story of my dog Rufus who is a 6yr old Labrador x Springer.

Last summer I was outside gardening when I heard a lot of whining from Rufus. I told him to be quiet but he continued. I looked round to see Rufus staring at the ground by our tree in the garden.

I went over to investigate and found a baby bird lying on the ground. It was alive but barely had any feathers and its eyes were not yet open. I took Rufus indoors and watched from the window to see if the mum of this bird would still tend to it. After an hour I saw nothing and decided to pick up the bird and place it in a small cardboard box and bring it indoors.

I then rang my vets and they gave me the number of a local wildlife organisation. I rang them and arranged to take the bird to them.

It turned out to be a Sparrow and with their care was hand reared successfully. They wanted to it release back into my garden, and it was fantastic to see the little Sparrow released.

That bird owes its life to my dog Rufus, many dogs may have killed it or ignored it but he didn’t stop whining till he got my attention.

It’s certainly a very lucky bird as I planning to cut the grass that day too !
